Steel Containers for Residential and Commercial Use

Secure storage containers are widely utilized by a number of industries. From construction site storage to sheltered space that can be used by a school, a metal container provides a durable, weather-resistant storage option. Garden centers, hospitals, and industrial facilities alike can each use steel cargo containers for storing excess materials and inventory. Homeowners like the ease and security of storing belongings onsite during large remodeling projects.

More convenient and affordable than traditional offsite storage spaces, a steel container is stored on your site for trouble-free access. No more traveling several miles away to access your extra inventory or grab that set of scaffolding for your project. Your steel storage container rental is located on your property or jobsite, saving you precious time. Even better, Steel Storage Containers can help you save money on your rental.

Steel Storage Container Sizes

Steel containers are available in multiple sizes to meet the needs of nearly any business or homeowner. Standard metal container sizes include:

10’ L x 8’ W x 8’ H – The smallest of the cargo containers, the 10 foot unit is just right for storing boxes of paperwork, the contents of one medium room, or exterior maintenance items.

20’ L x 8’ W x 8’ H – The 20 foot container provides the ideal amount of space for storing the contents of a small office during a remodel, hand tools and small to medium construction equipment, or excess retail inventory.

40’ L x 8’ W x 8’ H – The largest of the steel containers, the 40 foot unit offers plenty of storage space for schools, job sites, or the contents of a large home.

In addition to the standard units, steel containers are also available in 15 foot and 25 foot sizes. If your property has a small footprint, or an irregular layout, consider renting two smaller units rather than one large container for more flexibility in your storage requirements. Unsure which size or sizes would be best? Steel Storage Containers can help you find the right size cargo container for your home, business, or upcoming project.

FAQ

What are the containers made from?

The secure storage containers are made from sturdy corrugated steel. Built to be filled, stacked, and transported, steel cargo containers are strong and unyielding.

Is my property set up correctly for a steel container delivery?

In order for our partners to successfully deliver a container to your property, you will need to ensure you have adequate space for the truck to unload the container. The container is delivered using a tilt bed truck or trailer. A 20 foot container will need a forward clearance of 75 feet. Plan on at least 100 feet of forward clearance for a 40 foot cargo container. There should also be a path at least 12 feet wide to work within for the delivery of any standard width steel shipping container.

Do I need to do any prep work prior to delivery?

You do not need to do any special prep work prior to delivery of a shipping container used for storage. You should, however, determine a delivery area which is level and free from debris. Areas which are paved work best, but containers can also be placed on dirt or gravel.

What about my prized magnolia tree, underground sprinkler system, or septic tank?

It is best to avoid delivery in areas where the truck, trailer, or container could cause damage. Delivery drivers do their best to avoid damaging any property, but special concerns should be addressed prior to delivery to ensure the best possible outcome.

I’m worried about damage to my yard; can the shipping container sit on landscape timbers?

Yes, landscape timbers or railroad ties are often used to create a level surface and prevent sinking. Keep in mind during the delivery planning stage that any areas of grass deprived completely of light due to the container or timbers will likely die off, particularly if the container is used long-term.

Can I have a container delivered as soon as next week?

Our partners will make every effort to deliver your container at a time that is suitable to your schedule. Some deliveries can be achieved in as few as 2-3 business days. If you need a faster turnaround, please contact us immediately and we will do our best to assist you.

Should I plan to be present for delivery?

In most circumstances, your presence is not required for delivery—although it is preferred that you be onsite if possible to confirm the delivery spot.

What if I have more items to store than a 40 foot container will hold?

Steel Storage Containers can help you obtain as many metal containers as it will take to meet all of your storage needs.

If I am using the container for long term storage, will I need to do any maintenance?

Steel containers are made to withstand rain, snow, strong winds, hours upon hours of sunlight, loading, unloading, stacking, and transporting. The containers are very low maintenance, even when in use for extended periods of time.

You should plan to grease the locking mechanisms and hinges on occasion to ensure continued ease of access.

Can I get a storage container that has a door on each end?

Yes, modified metal containers are available. Most containers have one door. You can add an additional door to the end or the side. You can even add windows. See our page on Customization Options for more information.

What type of floor does the container have?

Standard steel shipping containers have plywood or hardwood floors.

How much weight can a steel storage container hold?

Under most circumstances, a steel storage container can hold more weight than the average customer would put in it. The 20 foot shipping container holds approximately 48,000 pounds and the 40 foot cargo container holds around 80,000 pounds.

Do I need a permit to have a steel storage container placed on my property?

Most communities do not have restrictions on steel storage containers. It is always best to contact your officials to check on the presence of any ordinances which might require you to obtain a permit.

Are there any items I should avoid storing in the cargo container?

It is not recommended (and in some cases, prohibited) to store any flammable, hazardous, or toxic materials in the steel container. You should also avoid storing any items that could melt, particularly if you will be using the steel cargo container for storage in very hot weather. Check out Container Uses to get an idea of commonly stored items.
